Moniker Menace?

A UB man was arrested after alleged tagging spree
~
Daniel Diehl, 20, of Union Beach, was arrested in Union Beach on Thursday, June 5, for allegedly tagging his monikers in over a dozen towns throughout Monmouth and Middlesex counties.

Union Beach Det. Michael Woodrow said Diehl was charged with third-degree criminal mischief for allegedly spray painting the monikers “CHUD” and “Sponge” on structures, concrete, trains and a police car during the past seven months.

Woodrow said this was the most unbelievable act he has ever seen, and that Diehl even went so far as to allegedly dangle over Route 287 in order to tag several overpasses.

The detective said there are about 100 tagging incidents throughout Monmouth and Middlesex counties. One, he said, where Diehl allegedly went so far as to tag a police car in Hazlet while three officers were inside a WaWa on Route 36.

Woodrow said he had never heard of someone being that brazen before. “Things like this don’t even happen in L.A.,” he said.

The detective said that tagging monikers, such as Diehl allegedly did, is part of building “underground street cred.” He said it was a thing on MySpace, and that tagging is a way for such an occult following to send messages to one another on the streets.

Woodrow said Diehl allegedly had pictures of the graffiti on his MySpace page.

The detective said Diehl allegedly tormented the two counties with his alleged spray painting.

Woodrow said “CHUD” stands for “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller,” named after a movie, and that “Sponge” was short for Spongebob Squarepants, a cartoon character.

He said Diehl would allegedly paint the word “Sponge” or sometimes the yellow character himself.

The detective said Diehl allegedly used colors such as red, white, blue, yellow and brown when monikering.

Woodrow said the damages are estimated to be in the thousands of dollars. He said the damage in Union Beach alone is estimated to be over $2,000.

The detective said Diehl was also charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Woodrow said police are investigating the possibility that Diehl also tagged the following towns: Union Beach, Keansburg, Keyport, Hazlet, Holmdel, Aberdeen, Red Bank, Marlboro, Old Bridge, Perth Amboy, Woodbridge, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, East Brunswick, Edison and Sayreville.

Woodrow said Diehl allegedly hit Keansburg hard, even painting stop signs to read “Can’t (STOP) CHUD.”

He also said New York authorities might have an interest in Diehl’s allegations.

The detective said it is likely Diehl might face charges from other towns, where it could cost thousands of dollars to clean up the graffiti.

Woodrow said Diehl is no longer in custody after being released on a bail of $10,000.

He said Diehl drove a green pick-up truck.

Make him clean every one of those tags up in front of a bunch of little kids. Make him explain to those kids that he was a real bonehead, and didn't care about himself, them, or the way their communities looked. Then post that conversation on my space and youtube.

It's not even about the monetary damage so much as it's the way all of us are made to feel, on a daily basis, when people crap all over our towns and then joke about it on the radio, in the news, and now the internet. And you can bet, at some point, another bozo will make a snarky comment about this post as well.

this article can be easily mistaken for satire. i'm not going to get into whether it's right or wrong to tag names on things, but seriously...why did this even make the press?

graphitti has been going on for quite a long time now, especially(get ready for a surpise here) in the towns mentioned in the article. the ignorance in the article is downright hilarious; namely the following excerpts:

"Woodrow said this was the most unbelievable act he has ever seen, and that Diehl even went so far as to allegedly dangle over Route 287 in order to tag several overpasses."

sounds like somebody should get away from keyport/union beach for a little while and see the kind of things that happen in the world, that are WAY worse than paint stains. and, for the record, i've seen plenty of tagged overpasses in many places.

"Diehl allegedly went so far as to tag a police car in Hazlet while three officers were inside a WaWa on Route 36"

so, is that what this is really about? or is it really about cleaning up the pristine communities that were "attacked" by Mr. Diehl and his flaming spraypaint cans from hell?

"Woodrow said he had never heard of someone being that brazen before. 'Things like this don’t even happen in L.A.,' he said"

again, consider leaving the bayshore area for a while. as far as things that do and don't happen in L.A....wow....wow. i'm amazed at the ignorance here. "things like this don't even happen in L.A.". my god. really? was that really said? i feel like i'm reading "the onion". THIS MAN IS A DETECTIVE!!! how can somebody HONESTLY be so ignorant!! surely, he MUST be from 117..jesus, i'm not even going to get into the facts about why that blows my mind so much.

"The detective said Diehl allegedly tormented the two counties with his alleged spray painting"

not only have i, personally, never heard anyone in the area complain about this(while i'm well aware who would offended and for good reason), but isn't "tormented" a little harsh? remember, diehl was spraypainting "CHUD" and "SPONGE" on things - why is he being made out to be worse than the son of sam?

i'd also like to comment on the subject matter that was being tagged: "CHUD" and "SPONGE". i believe everybody except detective woodrow and whoever published this article(for whatever reason) knows that there's way worse, PROFANE things that have been tagged around here and everywhere(even in...yes, here comes another surpise...the viceless city of los angeles..."L.A." in case nobody knew that). the name of a movie and a children's cartoon character should almost be welcomed at this point, since people are apparently going to continue tagging things anyway.

well, i believe i made my point. at the same time, i'm glad this article was posted because it was rather amusing to read...a bit bemusing as well. it's good to know this monster drove a green truck, he won't be needing it anymore if he gets what he deserves: THE DEATH PENALTY.

Well Melissa, Diehl wasn't arrested for different graffiti, but the SAME GRAFFITI! of course the other towns are gonna hit him up as well considering this entire thing is all about the money.

Thats right, MONEYYYYYY, not the worthless people of this bayshore area. These people around have never complained because its a better sight than the usual molestations and drug overdoses that plagued these towns since the 80's...

Now when you are going to argue that this about the people, maybe some real citizens should be interviewed because im sure most of them are not even remotely offended by this. DO NOT speak on the behalf of others when nobody even knows who you are Melissa Gaffney....
